Pope Leo X
Pope Leo X sent envoys to Germany to convince Luther to retract his theses. But Luther was not the kind of man to back down, so he said no. In 1520 Pope Leo X condemned Luther and banned his theses. In 1521 Luther was excommunicated from the church. Luther went into hiding. He hid in a castle in Wartburg, with Prince Frederick of Saxony. While Luther had to stay hidden, he decided to take the New Testament and translate it into German. By doing this he made the bible more affordable to the poor.
